Sudbury Five and the BSL welcome the Pontiac Pharaohs to the fold
2024-08-14

The Pontiac Pharaohs are now the first American team to join the Basketball Super League (BSL); don't expect them to be the last.

Making the jump from the closely affiliated TBL (The Basketball League), the Pharaohs bring to seven the membership of the BSL, joining the Sudbury Five, London Lightning, Windsor Express, KW Titans, Montreal Tundra and Newfoundland Roges in what will be the second year of play for the league that transitioned from the National Basketball League of Canada.

Located just an hour or so from Windsor (Ontario), Pontiac (Michigan) is a natural fit for the league, with multi-game options in a short period of time a definite attraction. Not that this decision was geographically based alone.

"As a league, we have been impressed with the Phararohs commitment to growth and believe that Chris Jackson (team owner) and his organization are primed to not only make the move but prosper in BSL," noted Evelyn Magley CEO of both the BSL and TBL.

Based on interlocking play witnessed in Sudbury in recent years, this move provides an opportunity for the Pharaohs to be a part of a league that starts earlier and plays a longer season at the highest level of competition below the NBA G League.

"It's exciting to be part of the growth and expansion from our time spent in the TBL to the BSL," noted Jackson in a league-issued media release. "I'm fortunate to be able to bring professional basketball to my hometown as our city continues to rebuild and redefine itself."

The BSL recently announced that year two of operation would see the regular season schedule begin in mid-November (versus just after Christmas in 2023-2024), with hope of more expansion in the future - perhaps as early as this winter.
