A 50-1 win might not be the ideal way to prep for a very tough first round playoff game - but it's a heck of a lot better than dealing with a 50-1 loss.

While Sudbury U18 Jr Spartans head coach Alex Vendramin fully realizes that there might not be a whole lot that is transferrable from a lopsided victory over the 1-7 Peterborough Wolverines to their upcoming road match-up with the 8-0 Brantford Bisons, that doesn't stop him from liking what he saw on Saturday, regardless.

"I liked that when our "ones" (first string players) were in at the beginning of the game, that they were executing on all levels," said Vendramin, his team led by two touchdown performances from Zidain Allen and Quin Mazzuchin, with Braedan Beggs, Steven Sola and King Iyenoma all reaching the end zone once each.

"We had the wind in our face in the opening quarter and ran the ball quite a bit with some very successful runs," added Vendramin. "The offensive line was opening up holes and whether it was Zidain or Breadan, they were very, very quick to make that read, hit that hole and get up field as quickly as they could."

"When we had the wind at our backs, we were able to throw the ball really well," Vendramin continued. "Steven (Sola) looked really good hitting multiple receivers. We were really spreading the ball around, which was nice to see, really getting as many people involved as we can."

Given the final outcome, it only stands to reason that several individuals drew the praise of the coaching staff, including young offensive linemen Zach White and Will Elliott as well as the swiss-army knife that is Alex Vildis.

"We are constantly moving him around and putting him in different spots," said Vendramin. "He works really, really hard in practice to earn his minutes. When he is on the field, he uses every play as an opportunity to impact the game."

Defensively, Jaden Brennan and Cole Preston have looked more than solid in their first year in this age bracket while back-up QB Ian MacDonald "completed quite a few passes and was able to get a score under his belt".

Finishing the summer with a regular season record of 5-3, the U18 Jr Spartans know that they have nothing to lose in their road playoff encounter this weekend. "They know they're going up against a really strong opponent - but I think our team is pretty hungry right now," said Vendramin.

"I think they are deriving a lot of motivation internally, which is great to see."

For all intents and purposes, the Sudbury crew are hitting their toughest schedule at the best possible time, playing their best football of the year.

"I think a big part of our offensive success has actually been due to our defensive success," said Vendramin, his team surrendering just 17 points in their past three games, 16 of those against the Quinte Skyhawks alone.

"They set us up with really good field position on so many drives, allowing us to have a much shorter distance to score. Our quarterback play has been awesome; they've been able to find our receivers."

"And our receiving corps and running backs are very dynamic, very quick, so if they get the ball in space, they can make somebody miss and create a big gain."

Rounding out the scoring on Saturday were Koen Palmquist (seven PATs) and Massimo Grossi (rouge).
