It would be hard to look at the recent Michigan tournament appearance for the Sudbury U16 Voyageurs as anything but a resounding success.
This in spite of not walking away with top honours at the event.
Still, a summer trek south of the border that featured four straight wins and an extra-inning 1-0 loss in the finals is far from ordinary - nor anything to be ashamed of.
Sudbury U16 starter A.J. Dubeau limited Michigan Coastal Baseball to just four hits over eight innings of play, striking out nine but was still tagged with a loss in the gutsy effort.
The Sudbury bats were not nearly so silent in their opening encounter, blasting the Sluggers - Messner U15 entry 9-1 as Gabriel Larocque drilled a two-run home run to provide all the support that pitcher Chris St Germain would need.
The latter went the distance in a five-inning contest, striking out four while the Sluggers managed an equal number of hits, two of those base runners erased when Sudbury catcher Colton Nowoselsky gunned down their steal attemts.
Gabriel Larocque, Ryan Spencer and Ethan Thompson scored two runs apiece, with Hudson Fletcher and Larocque driving in two runs each.
Sudbury pitching remained at the forefront in game two as Ryan Spencer tossed a two-hit gem fanning ten in helping lead the Voyageurs to a 4-0 victory over 5 Tool Baseball (deCardenas).
Spencer helped his own cause by plating a pair of runners, one of just five Voyageurs batsmen to reach base via a hit. Leadoff hitter Max Arnold circled the bases to account for half of the runs scored for the northern Ontario entry.
Another close affair in game three but this time with substantially more offense as the Sudbury U16 Voyageurs outlasted the Michigan Titans 11-7.
Brody Mabbott (three hits; three runs; RBI) and Ethan Thompson (three hits; two runs; two RBIs) were in the thick of things near the top of the Sudbury order as the Voyageurs overcame an early 4-1 deficit.
Sudbury hurler Chris Chamberland entered the game in the bottom of the fifth and his team leading 8-6, proceeding to allow just one run over three innings of work, striking out four.
The Sunday morning match-up was all Sudbury as the Voyageurs blanked the Motor City Hit Dogs 8-0 with Braiden Paul producing yet another quality start on the mound: 5 IP - 2 hits - 2 walks - seven strikeouts.
Multi-hit games came courtesy of Ethan Thompson, Ryan Spencer and Colton Nowoselsky, with Thompson scoring twice and driving in three while Spencer accounted for three run scored for the winners.
Seven hits in the final, including two each by Gabriel Larocque and Ethan Thompson, went for naught as Sudbury was unable to string together anything in the way of even a moderate rally.
Meanwhile, the U18 Voyageurs went 3-1 in Michigan, capturing two of their three round robin games as well as posting a 3-0 victory in the consolation final.
