Pitching at the forefront as Sudbury takes three of four from Oshawa
2024-06-21

PBLO (Premier Baseball League of Ontario) series in Sudbury would seldom be described as a fabulous display of pitching excellence.

The June 8th-9th four game set between the Oshawa 18U Legionaires and the Sudbury 18U Voyageurs proved to be an exception to that rule - in a very impressive way.

With the teams combining to plate a grand total of just 20 runs over the two day almost non-stop pitching duel, the locals were very much on top of their game, taking three of the four encounters.

In fact, the Voyageurs actually reeled off three straight victories after dropping a 5-2 decision in the opener - despite shortstop Devon Madore belting a two-run home run for the home side.

William Arsenault came within an out of pitching his team to a complete game two triumph, scattering six hits but only one run as Sudbury edged Oshawa 2-1 later on Saturday.

Callum Baron and Nate Parsons recorded two hits each, with the former driving in a run while Parsons scored one of the two Voyageur runs, with leadoff hitter Justin Dandeneau accounting for the second.

In the end, however, it would take a walkoff single by Brady Soucy that drove home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Sudbury pitching was even better the next morning as Bracebridge native Mark Holm was touched for just two hits while striking out seven and handing over the ball to Chris St Germain.

Things got interesting as St Germain faced six batters in closing out the seventh, allowing the 2-0 lead to be cut in half but still coming through with the save.

Baron slapped out two more hits and drove in both runs for Sudbury with Noah Leveille and Alex Frawley coming around to score.

Yet another walkoff victory for the Voyageurs in game four as Sudbury and Oshawa were deadlocked at 2-2 after seven innings of play before an Alex Frawley single allowed the locals to put up a two-spot in the eighth, chalking up a 4-3 win.

Starter Noah Portelance worked the first five innings for the northern squad, tagged for two runs before Braiden Paul earned the win with three innings of solid relief work.

Paul allowed two hits and struck out two as the Sudbury offense made the most of their five-hit attack.
