It's hard not to be disappointed when your team is eliminated after round robin play by a few one hundreds of a point in a GF (goals for) / GA (goals against) tie-breaker in tournament play.
Sudbury U11 Rockhounds head coach Michael Wilson however was far more proud than disappointed after his team returned from their first event of the year, the Conrad Rollings Memorial Tournament in Newmarket with a pair of victories and a very close loss in their pockets.
The one-two punch of Hector Medland (4 goals) and Daxton Wabano (3 goals) came flying out the gates as Sudbury whalloped the Kawartha Lakes Fury 9-1 in their opening affair, with Bo Michelutti and Jimmy Simpson rounding out the scoring.
Six first period goals by the Rockhounds left little in doubt in game two as Sudbury improved to 2-0 with a 9-4 win over the Burlington Blaze, with Medland adding another three goals to his resume.
Nwabdasse Trudeau matched his teammate's hat trick while Bo Michelutti, Daxton Wabano and Justin Gouin chipped in with one goal apiece.
The U11 Rockhounds overcame a 5-1 first period deficit before falling 10-7 to the Barrie Bombers in their final preliminary round game as Hector Medland finished with an 11-goal weekend.
Daxton Wabano added a pair of tallies and Bo Michelutti scored for a third straight game as the locals then awaited the outcome of some remaining games in the ten team division before finding out the ranked fifth overall, just a hair out of fourth place and a semi-final berth.
Rounding out the Sudbury roster are Jack Wilson, Ben Hepting, Msko Ashawasega, Luna Bertrand-Thrush, Blake Dumont, Blair Simerson and affiliated call-ups Troy Michelutti and Grayson Antonio, with the latter unavailable for the event in Newmarket.
