A series split to open the 16U Voyageurs season
2024-05-15

Shame the Sudbury 16U Voyageurs were not afforded a "carry-over" of a couple of runs from one game to the next as they opened their 2024 season two weeks ago in Oshawa.

A 13-hit attack would see the locals crush the Midwestern Ontario Bearcats 12-3 early on Saturday, only to come up just one run short later in the day, falling 6-5 to the Oshawa Legionaires.

A.J. Dubeau and Colton Nowoselsky finished with three hits apiece in game one, with Ethan Thompson and Ryan Spencer driving in two runs apiece. Pitchers Chris St Germain and Hudson Fletcher held the Bearcats in check, surrendering six hits and limited the free passes to just four.

After scoring three times in the opening encounter, leadoff hitter Max Arnold crossed the plate two more times in game two with Brody Mabbott enjoying the only multi-hit game for Sudbury versus Oshawa.

The Voyageurs built up a 5-2 lead as starting pitcher Braiden Paul went four innings (2 runs; one hit; six walks; five strikeouts), but the bullpen could not hold on as the Legionaires scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The second weekend of play was not nearly as kind to the local 16U crew, losing three straight to the Ottawa Nepean Canadians, though the scores were certainly not embarrassing (4-9, 4-10, 9-13).

The team is back in action at home this weekend, facing the London Badgers for games starting at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. The Sudbury 18U Voyageurs are also at home to London for three games this weekend, all taking place right after the 16U teams are done.
