Cubs make it five of six against the Voodoos
2024-01-12

The Greater Sudbury Cubs just keep finding ways to beat the Powassan Voodoos.

Enjoying likely their quickest start of the season only to endure a very sluggish mid-game stretch, the Cubs ultimately benefitted from an unlikely tandem teaming up for the game-winning goal in a 5-3 home ice win on Thursday.

The triumph marked the fifth time in six meetings that Sudbury had outscored Powassan, including twice by a single goal and twice by a two-goal margin.

Coming off a come from behind 7-5 win over the same opponent last weekend, the Cubs jumped all over the Voodoos from the first drop of the puck, rewarded just 15 seconds in when Josh Kavanagh buried a great centering feed from Samuel Assinewai.

Assinewai doubled the advantage on the PP at exactly the ten minute mark and the homeside looked ready to run away and hide.

Yet it was the Voodoos who came out of the ice cleaning break with renewed vigour and purpose as Zach Turner made a nifty feed to Ryan Patrick, stationed just off the back of the net with the veteran quickly move the puck to his forehand to cut the deficit in half.

With the tempo of play slowed notably in the ealy stages of period two, Powassan twice capitalized on missed Sudbury assignments off the draw, with both Cameron Lemcke and Patrick finding the back of the net, moments after a faceoff.

Sudbury received the spark they needed some ten minutes later as Hudson Chitaroni redirected a point shot from Christopher Innes with the man advantage, pulling their team even at 3-3.

Less than two minutes later, Mateo Signoretti coralled an outlet pass along the right hashmarks and proceeded to thread the needle to Brady Bouchard, cutting through a seam of Powassan bodies.

The defenceman turned forward burst down the right flank and zipped a shot far corner, just over the pad of netminder Miles Gordon for what would stand as the decisive tally in this game.

Chitaroni added a second into an empty net when Assinewai unselfishly headmanned the puck as the Cubs made it six straight games this month where they have collected at least a point (4-0-1-1).

Sudbury visits the French River Rapids in Noelville on Sunday afternoon before kicking off a home and home set with the Soo Thunderbirds next Thursday evening at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
