The latest installment of the Sudbury/Nickel City - Sault Ste Marie minor hockey rivalry was taking place Sunday morning at the Carmichael Arena, and it most certainly did not disappoint.
After playing to a pair of one goal games the previous day, it was all too fitting that the Nickel City U10 AA Jr Sons and the Soo U10 AA Jr Greyhounds would play to a 5-5 tie in the weekend series finale in a contest that went back and forth.
That was especially true in the opening period as the teams combined for six goals - three from the Sons (two from Jarrett Marshall and another from Chase Morrell) and a troika from the Hounds (Grayson Montgomery, Rafael Fata, Jakob Maninos).
With both squads taking full advantage of their power play opportunities, albeit in a contest that featured only ten minor penalties in total, the final two frames were just as hotly contested as tallies from Chase Morrell, with his second, and Cedric Poulin were countered by snipes from both Grayson Montgomery and Jakob Maninos, with both youngsters joining the two goal club.
Though both teams are assured a berth at the All-Ontario U15 AAA Championships next month, there wasn't a whole lot of "easing into the playoffs" taking place in game two as the powerhouse Greyhounds posted a 4-1 win over the Sudbury U15 AAA Nickel Capitals.
The homeside opened the scoring courtesy of a redirected goal from Ashton Pitawanakwat as Sudbury kept things tight through one period of play.
Eventually, however, the Sault Ste Marie 2008 crew coached by Terry Chitaroni, a team that has been a pleasure to watch for a few years now, would break through as Nik Rossetto, Brock Chitaroni and Danny MacDonald all found the back of the net in the middle stanza, with defenceman Ryker Young closing out the scoring for the visitors in the third.
