The Nickel City U13 AAA Sons came up with an even split as their four-game experience at the Silver Stick Hockey Tournament featured a quartet of games decided by a single goal.
The northern Ontario lads were edged 4-3 by the Chicago Fury in the opener as Cooper Niquet, Dacey Dupuis and Preston Hebert scored for coach Corey Crane and his staff.
The Windy City provided a more amenable foe in game two as Nickel City trimmed the Chicago Reapers 3-2 courtesy of the offensive punch provided by Ezio Cusinato, Seth Verbiwski and Nick Christakos.
The teeter-totter trend remained true to form in game three as the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite slipped past the Sons 5-4 as Ty Belanger and Dacey Dupuis both came through with two goal efforts in a losing cause.
Dupuis continued to hold the hot hand in the tournament finale for Nickel City, drilling home his fourth and fifth markers in Port Huron as the Sons upset the Toronto Jr Canadiens 5-4.
Dupuis was joined on the winning side of the scoresheet by Seth Verbiwski, Malik Jakubo and Cooper Niquet, each of whom chipped in with a goal of their own.
The balance of the Nickel City roster is comprised of Bradley Huffman, Ty Imbeau, Nicolas Rocca, Owen Angus, Greyson Hnatiuk, Jackson Mead, Tayden Smith, Ryan Thompson and Whitney Basso.
Assistant coaches Todd Crane and Erik Hebert, trainer Joel Belanger and team manager Cindy Robert are all part of the staff that Corey Crane has assembled to help him navigate this very interesting year.
The Nickel City reps are off to Sault Ste Marie this coming weekend, doing battle with a Soo Jr Greyhounds team which has won three of their four meetings to date (9-2, 5-2, 2-5, 6-2).
The U13 AAA Sons will close out official tournament with the Oakville Rangers Winter Classic from January 19th to the 22nd.
