With Sudbury home to a number of
top-end female soccer teams, very few young ladies still find their way
to the roster of the competitive boys teams. But nobody ever said that
12 year-old Veronica Mazzella was just another girl.
The talented youngster is not just another member of the Sudbury
Athletic Juventini ’93 boys squad, by a very key part of the success
they’ve enjoyed this season. After first taking to the fields at the age
of three and playing Timbits within the Sudburnia Soccer Club, Mazzella
remembers spending countless hours practicing with a couple of other
soccer lovers.
“I think my sister, Anjelica, first started playing with me as I came
out to her games” explained Mazzella. “And then I hooked up with Matt
Dykstra (a member of the Pan 92 boys) and we continued playing indoors.”
Originally nicknamed “Mighty Mouse” primarily due to her smaller
stature, Mazzella has the feistiness to compensate.
“I think that I’m pretty aggressive…and I’m good at feeding my
teammates” she said, acknowledging that scoring has seldom been a big
concern to her. “Making plays, like a really good pass, that makes me
happy” states Mazzella.
Playing much of the year at the outside left midfielder position,
Mazzella has no regrets about moving from an all-girls team. “The game
is faster and the boys are more aggressive” says Mazzella, two key
attributes that the graduating student at Corpus Christi is intent on
developing.
“I’m improving my speed…I’m pretty good at my footwork but I still get
nervous and want to pass it quickly to my teammates” admits Mazzella.
