While still a ways from donning the
jersey of Team Ontario, thirteen year-old Sudbury Canadians striker
Serena San Cartier recently took the first important step in gaining
some attention at the Provincial level.
After working with Regional Coach Brian Ashton for the past year or so,
San Cartier was one of just two Northern Ontario chosen to work out with
the provincial U-13 squad following the fall talent identification camp.
It was a move that required a big adjustment for the Grade 8 student at
R.L. Beattie. “You can tell there’s a difference with these players the
moment you step on the field – it’s a whole other level” acknowledged
San Cartier after a recent indoor workout.
Blessed with the family trait of speed, the middle of three sisters
continues to work on rounding out her game. “I’ve always been faster and
could score goals. I have to learn to do everything else better, passing
and ball control” she says.
The multi-sport athlete who still competes in a variety of different
sports, San Cartier first played soccer at around eight years of age,
taking part with the Sudburnia Soccer Club for two seasons before
starting her competitive career with the Canadians.
She takes some valuable insight from her experience of the past few
months. “I have to work on communication”, something she admits does not
come naturally. “And I need to work on my decision making.” Still, one
senses that we’ve only just seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to
the soccer talents of Serena San Cartier.
