Mastroianni races well, returning from injury
2019-06-27

Returning to racing following a few weeks off nursing a stress fracture, local triathlete Isabella Mastroianni looked to be in mid-season form at a 2019 Junior Cup Series event at Lakefield College in Peterborough last weekend.

Not only did the St Benedict Catholic Secondary School senior win the female division, going away, but Mastroianni finished 11th overall, crossing the line ahead of no less than seven of her male counterparts.

Covering the course in a time of 1:09.48, the representative of the Loaring Personal Coaching crew was just under two and a half minutes ahead of second place finisher Haileigh Chenier of Kanata (1:12.15), with Aliyah Capon (Lakefield) in third at 1:13.13.

Though Mastroianni built up her lead right from the start, out of the water more than a minute ahead of any of her competitors in the swim, she also managed her fastest 5 km time ever, bringing it home in style in 19:38.

Also enjoying some recent triathlon success were Nick Lambert and Kelly Thompson, the duo placing 5th and 6th respectively in the Guelph Lake Subaru Series Triathlon back in mid-June.

Competing in the sprint triathlon event, Lambert, a native of Elliot Lake who moved to Sudbury last year to attend Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, was all by himself in fifth place, in a field of more than 400, posting a time of 1:02.19.

A second year student at Laurentian and graduate of Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Thompson was almost two minutes back (1:04.08), but still comfortably in sixth place, 33 seconds faster than Garrett Mason of Everett.

Ironically, Lambert and Thompson were almost dead even after the first two legs of the triathlon, before the former pulled away with an impressive run of 17:49 in the 5km leg, with Thompson covering that distance in 19:47.

A member of the Laurentian Voyageurs varsity baseball team, Thompson is in North Bay, this weekend, site of their annual Canada Day triathlon weekend, then travelling north for the Heart of Gold Triathlon, in Timmins, the following weekend.
