Close battles in a competitive grouping for 15U Chill
2018-02-07
by Randy Pascal

The Northern Chill U15 girls appear to have found their niche within the Ontario Volleyball Association tournament circuit.

Competing in the McGregor Cup ? Championship “C” bracket late last month in Barrie, the locals experienced a mix of close victories and tough defeats that culminated in the crew falling just short of a podium performance.

“Caliber wise, we belong in this division,” noted head coach Joanna Castonguay. “Being so close to a medal will hopefully give us more motivation moving forward.” The Sudbury girls worked a little overtime right out of the gate, trimming the Thundercats Black (York Region) 26-24, 26-24 in their opener, but falling to the Leaside Lightning 14-25, 11-25 to close out pool play.

Another close one come time for the quarter-finals as the Chill had just enough to stop the Kawartha Krushers 25-23, 25-23, earning a berth in the final four. The northern reps were right in the mix in both of their ensuing playoff matches, dropping a 24-26, 15-25 decision to the Aurora Storm Twister and beaten 21-25, 25-23, 8-15 by the Lightning, once again, in the bronze medal affair.

“We started off the day with incredible energy, I think shocking our opponent a little,” said Castonguay. “We just couldn’t sustain the same energy throughout the day. Josee Beauchamp played consistently well all day and gave us a spark when we needed it.”

The remainder of the Northern Chill 15U roster includes Maggy Davidson, Emily Ayotte, Kiera Brabant, Kyla Parsons, Julianna Toppazzini, Fyscher McQueen, Isabelle Scratch, Bella Martelli, Faith Charbonneau, Sydney Nicholls and Danielle Stinson.
