A second place finish for 17U Chill
by Randy Pascal
Starting the new calendar year in style, the Northern Chill U17 girls produced their first medal winning performance of the season, returning
home with silver medals following McGregor Cup – Trillium “D” play last Saturday in Barrie.
The Chill managed to squeak out first place in Pool “C” round robin action, despite splitting their games with the Georgian Cubs – Red (26-24,
25-6) and the Collingwood Black Diamonds (15-25, 21-25). Their cross-over battle with the Orillia Suns produced a straight set victory (25-19,
25-18) that propelled the Sudbury girls into a semi-final encounter.
It wasn’t easy, but the Chill would get past the West Nipissing U16 Wild 22-25, 25-18, 15-9, earning a berth in the final, before their run would
come to an end. Coach Kevin Wiseman and company would settle for second place, stopped 22-25, 17-25 by the Storm Ice from Aurora.
“The girls played outstanding all day,” said Wiseman. “The effort on defense and the quality of the passing was a catalyst to the Chill success.” In
particular, the former Lo-Ellen Park Secondary star noted the work of setter Erin Gaffney in running the offense, as well as the energy of
middle Kate Dugdale, most notably in the come from behind win over the Wild.
The balance of the 17U Chill 2017-2018 roster features Dara Desrochers, Jayden Rivers, Ryann Hudson, Taylor Bailey, Jaime Schweyer, Mallory Frantz
and Sydney Koehler.
