Chargers and Vikings meet in final in North Bay
by Randy Pascal

The Lockerby Vikings senior girls volleyball team are on a nice little roll as they prepare for the final six weeks of regular season play, leading to the city championships in February.

The Vikes walked away with their third tournament championship banner in as many tries, capturing the Wildcat Christmas Classic in North Bay during the final week of school.

The Lockerby crew did not drop a single set while posting a 4-0 record in pool play, getting the better of the Algonquin Barons from North Bay (25-13, 25-20), North Shore (25-11, 25-19), Mackenzie Mustangs from Deep River (25-10, 25-15) and the St Joseph Scollard Hall Bears from North Bay (25-11, 25-17).

An all-Sudbury cross-over match would see the Vikings defeating the Lasalle Lancers 25-13, 25-15, advancing coach Stephen Beausoleil's squad to yet another battle with the Confederation Chargers, the same two teams which have met in each of the past two SDSSAA city finals.

The matchup produced the closest challenge of the day for the Vikings, though they were equal to the task, downing the Chargers 25-23, 25-17. The 2017-2018 edition of the Lockerby senior girls volleyball team includes Alexanne Coulombe, Taylor Bailey, Kayley Hancharuk, Jaclyn Groom, Brooke Smith, Lexi Johnson, Mikaela Richter, Sydney Coles, Becca Hopkins, Kayla Murray, Bianca Toppazzini and Veronica Dynes.
