Chilling with the Cubs in Barrie
by Randy Pascal
Working their way through an entire array of Georgian Cubs teams at the Challenge Cup – Trillium “D” tournament earlier this month, the
Northern Chill 17U girls eventually settled for a fifth place tie in a field of nine teams in Barrie.
The Chill were surprised by a very talented Cubs 16U squad early Saturday morning, beaten 25-15, 25-16 by the eventual bronze medal winners. Game two
would go right down to the wire, as the Sudbury girls dropped a 25-15, 17-25, 16-14 decision to the Collingwood Black Diamonds, leaving the locals
sitting third in their pool following round robin action.
More of the host team to come as the Georgian Cubs – White stopped the Chill 24-26, 25-16, 15-10 in their cross-over match, with coach Kevin
Wiseman and company relegated to the consolation side of the draw.
Finally, the Chill managed to solve one of the Barrie entries, downing the Georgian Cubs – Red 25-22, 25-12, closing things off with a 25-12,
27-25 victory over the West Nipissing Wild 16U. The team is back in action on Saturday, January 14th, returning to Barrie for McGregor Cup –
Trillium “D” play.
The 2017-2018 17U Chill roster is comprised of Erin Gaffney, Dara Desrochers, Jayden Rivers, Ryann Hudson, Taylor Bailey, Kate Dugdale, Jaime
Schweyer, Mallory Frantz and Sydney Koehler.
