Podium placement for L.U. runners
2017-10-04
by Randy Pascal

It has been a fall to remember for Laurentian cross-country runner Jenny Bottomley. The sophmore sensation continued her rapid upward ascent last weekend in New York, capturing first place at the Mike Woods Geneseo Cross Country Invitational at Letchworth State Park.

Bottomley's performance would lead the Voyageur women to a second place finish at an event that drew a total of 14 NCAA Division III schools. With some team members returning slowly to health, the L.U. men's team also fared well, placing 7th of the 17 teams that competed.

Bottomley covered the 6km course in a personal best time of 21:27, outpacing the field of 197 runners. She was followed by Heidi Tuszkiewicz (10th - 22:25 - PB), Nicole Rich (23:11), Megan Crocker (23:13) and rookie Nicole Sartor (23:17).

The Voyageurs established a pair of meet records for the team, averaging a time of 22:42 across their five runners. In becoming the first ever L.U. runner to capture top spot at the annual meet, Bottomley also walked away with a program best time for the race, showcasing a 1:44 improvement over her time from one year ago.

"Jenny was aggressive from the start, taking the lead almost from the gun," said Associate Head Coach Darren Jermyn. "She was challenged by Geneseo runners Ramirez and Cossaro at the 4.5km mark, but she put the hammer down with 800m to go and was just flying at the finish."
