Club championship Sunday features dramatic finishes
2017-08-21
by Randy Pascal

Both Timberwolf Golf Course and the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club would feature a sprint to the wire on Sunday, as several golfers were in contention, at both venues, with the men's club championships on the line at both sites.

The experience of Jay Jewett would pay dividends at Timberwolf, as his two round score of 155 (78-77) was one better than Josh McCully (76-80) and teenager Alexander Fowke (79-77).

Greg O'Neill would take first flight honours, while Jennie Gauthier captured the ladies honours and Rob Cousins enjoyed bragging rights in the seniors bracket. While Matt Matheson won the junior crown, stringing together rounds of 81 and 80, he had to hold off 12 year old Ben Fowke, who finished two shots back.

Trailing by eight strokes at the turn on Sunday, Fowke blistered the back nine with a round of 39, as he prepares to travel to Kingston this coming weekend for invitational tournament play.

Meanwhile, at the Idylwylde, Matt Bortolotto was a model of consistency, carding rounds of 77-77-78 (232), good for the narrowest of victories over both Vince Palladino (76-80-77=233) and Nick Quesnel (81-78-74).

No surprise that Tristan Renaud ran away with the junior club title, though rounds of 71 & 68 continue to pad the already impressive resume of the local talent. Similarly, no one could really challenge veteran Louise Sheridan for the Ladies crown, as she posted an 18-stroke victory over second place finisher Debbie Smith.
