Provincial play for Northern Chill 17U girls
2017-04-17
by Randy Pascal

After barely clawing their way into one of the final few spots in Division I play for provincials, the Northern Chill 17U Girls proved that they more than belonged in the end.

Leading off with Friday pool play a few weeks back, the Sudbury squad rebounded from a 25-22, 24-26, 6-15 heartbreaker against the Georgetown Impact and a tough 23-25, 18-25 setback at the hands of the Oakville Thunder Blue, upending the Markham Thunder 25-22, 25-18 in the final match of the night.

Re-sorted into “power pools” for Saturday encounters, the Chill again finished 1-2, sandwiching losses to the Phoenix 16U Fury (23-25, 22-25) and Galaxy Stars 23-25, 25-22, 10-15, both from Toronto, around a 25-18, 25-14 victory over the Markham Wildcats Tigers.

Slotted into Tier 4 for playoff action on Sunday, the northern crew evened the score with the Georgetown Impact, eliminating their very first opponent of the weekend in three back and forth sets, 25-18, 18-25, 16-14.

The Tier 4 semi-final would also go three sets, but not in favour of the Chill this time around, beaten 25-20, 19-25, 15-7 by the Orillia Suns Nova.

The 2016-2017 edition of the Northern 17U Chill roster included Marissa Beeson, Natasha Gervais, Christina Rorison, Lexi Johnson, Kayla Murray, Samantha McGrath, Becca Hopkins, Alison Labrash, Mikeala Richter, Sydney Coles, Brooke Smith, head coach Craig Thomson and assistants Kevin Wiseman and Megan Labrash.
