15U Chill looking more than ready for provincials
2017-03-29
by Randy Pascal

One final tune-up before provincials, on home court no less, and the Northern Chill 15U Girls made sure it was a good one. Making the jump to “Championship Flight” play for the first time this year, the locals cracked the final four of the Bugarski Cup tournament last Saturday at St Benedict Catholic Secondary School, settling for a fourth place finish.

Pitted against Vision Volleyball from North Bay right out of the gate, the Sudbury girls fell to their northern rivals, 14-25, 27-29, but came right back with a tough 25-23, 26-24 victory over the Aurora Storm Twister 14U crew.

Garnering second place in Pool “B”, coach James Schweyer’s troops easily disposed of their counterpart in Pool “C”, upending the Orillia Suns Eclipse 25-19, 25-9. The Chill proved no match for the powerhouse REACH Prime from Toronto in the semi-finals, beaten 5-25, 21-25, but were quite competitive in the bronze medal showdown, falling just short against the Vision for a second time, losing 24-26, 18-25.

“One of the goals for this weekend was to serve tough and pass well,” stated coach Schweyer. “Emma Squires and Emma Bissonnette consistently passed, served and hit well, and Amelina Iturregui helped seal our win over Orillia with strong serving. The strong play of our team, throughout the day, demonstrated that they belong in the Championship division.”

Rounding out the roster of the 2016-2017 Northern Chill 15U are Ayla Jones, Erika Brown, Katie Staffen, Lauren Jeanneault, Hailey Selk, Brielle Chicoine, Amber Jacques, Katia Legros, and Symantha Welsh. Nathan Squires and Sheldon Root serve as assistant coaches with the team.

OVA (Ontario Volleyball Association) provincial championships for the 15U age bracket are scheduled for the weekend of April 28th to 30th in Kitchener-Waterloo.
