17U Girls right on the cusp of the cutoff
by Randy Pascal
The way Northern Chill 17U Girls head coach Craig Thomson sees it, his local crew is going to be right on the cusp of the
Division 1/Division 2 cutoff come time for the OVA (Ontario Volleyball Association) championship March 31st to April 2nd.
Missing out on a chance to bump themselves into better position at their final preliminary tournament of the year, the Chill settled for seventh at
their recent Bugarski Cup competition in Barrie, a couple of spots lower than Thomson would have liked.
The Chill were right there in the mix, going three sets with the Etobicoke E381 Blues (20-25, 25-21, 9-15), but losing soundly to the eventual
gold medal winners, Etobicoke Titans Oceanus, 9-25, 8-25.
Placing third in Pool “A”, the locals put up quite a fight against the top team in Pool “B” in their cross-over encounter, yielding to the 16U Pakmen
(Mississauga), 19-25, 25-23, 10-15.
The Sudbury girls picked up their only win of the day, upending the Georgian Cubs 25-17, 25-22, but could not find a way to overcome the E381
Blues in a closely contested rematch, beaten 17-25, 25-21, 8-15.
“We really let some athletes work through some stuff in the morning, and it seemed to payoff after lunch,” noted Thomson. “Our passing was the best that
it has been all year, and I liked the play from our outsides, but serving hurt us again.”
The 17U Chill roster includes Marissa Beeson, Natasha Gervais, Christina Rorison, Lexi Johnson, Kayla Murray, Samantha McGrath, Becca Hopkins, Alison
Labrash, Mikeala Richter, Sydney Coles, Brooke Smith, coach Thomson and assistants Kevin Wiseman and Megan Labrash.
