Laurels glow at Sunshine Classic
2016-06-22
by Randy Pascal

The final meet of the gymnastics interclub season would see the GymZone Sudbury Laurels crew travelling to North Bay for the Sunshine Classic, returning to Sudbury with no less than 72 medals from the weekend.

Head coach Terra Davidson made note of some outstanding individual performances, including Chanelle Lazure, competing in the Level 3 Age 11 division. “Chanelle completed her kip on bars for the first time, and also had an awesome floor routine, with powerful tumbling passes,” noted Davidson.

Lazure earned a gold medal with her floor routine, en route to a second place finish in the all-around aggregate. Yasmine Larouche (Level 3 Age 9) was rock solid on all four apparatuses, mixing in a pair of gold medal performances (vault and uneven bars), with three silver medal placings (beam, floor, all-around aggregate).

“Yasmine had a very consistent and confident competition,” said Davidson. “Her biggest highlight was her high-flying handspring vault.” The Sunshine Classic also provided an entry level to interclub competition for several younger gymnasts, including eight year-old Marin O’Malley.

The Level 3 competitor earned gold stickers on vault, beam, floor and aggregate, and a silver sticker on bars.
