Tournoi des Etoiles shines bright in Sudbury
2016-04-01
by Randy Pascal

While there are a small handful of elementary hockey tournaments that will fill local arenas at this time of year, there is little doubt that the “Tournoi des Etoiles” has attracted one of the more interesting followings.

Taking place at three Sudbury venues this week, the competition open to francophone schools has attracted a field of thirty teams, nineteen of which are local. The balance of the lineup incorporates squads from Ottawa, Chapleau, Sault Ste Marie, North Bay, Wawa, Astorville, New Liskeard and such.

Franco-Cité “A” from Ottawa captured the “AAA” banner with a 4-3 win over the Jean-Paul II Comètes (Val Caron), who received goals from Hunter Brazier, Caleb Rainville and Alex Rhéaume.

The “AA” Elite title went the way of Trillium from Chapleau, picking up a 5-4 shootout win over Notre-Dame Hanmer, as Zacharie Giroux netted a hat trick in a losing cause. The Félix-Ricard Jaguars claimed the “AA” bragging rights, defeating Alliance St Joseph (Chelmsford) 5-3.

Kaleb Muzzi, Kaleb Courville, Nikolas Smith, Ethan Corcoran and Brett Lafortune scored for the winners, with Jacob Gaudet (2) and Max Bélanger countering for the Chelmsford crew. The “A” final featured a pair of out of town teams, as St Joseph Dubreuilville slipped past the Algonquin Barons of North Bay 3-1.
